Opinion: Tolerance does not come easily to us all

In mid-September, I stood at the very same lectern from which Lenin had delivered his famous "land, peace and bread" speech shortly after the Russian Revolution. I had actually stood there once before - in 1991 - when the theatre was empty. This time it was bright and buzzing, hosting the launch of the All Different All Equal campaign on human rights, diversity and participation. There must be a number of ironies about this.

The campaign is being led by the Council of Europe and supported by the European Commission. The formal political speeches emphasised the imperative for young people to be tolerant, engage with anti-racism and challenge xenophobia. Modern Europe had no place for prejudice and discrimination.
