Opinion: Vox pop - Should we worry about security of children'sdetails?

1 min read
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has asked consultants Deloitte to examine security procedures for the ContactPoint database of children in England after the personal data of 25 million people was lost in the post.

YES - Phil Booth, national co-ordinator, NO2ID

No system designed for access by 330,000 people can ever be watertight. Anyone motivated to do so can log on and identify vulnerable children by the services they have received, however 'secure' access controls might be.

The fact that ministers have suggested concealing the details of certain children, such as the kids of politicians and celebrities, on systems like ContactPoint shows that they are aware of the risks inherent in putting personal details - not only children's, but also those of parents or carers - on to them. Why should my family's privacy and security be less respected than anyone elses?
