Opinion: Vox pop - Should Labour's child poverty target become law?

In his speech to the Labour Party conference last week, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he would enshrine the goal of ending child poverty by 2020 in law, so whichever party is in power can be held accountable to the target.

Enshrining its promise to end child poverty in legislation is a bold and historic move by the government. This is a commitment to help ensure that future generations of children can reach their full potential, live without fear of social exclusion and lead healthy lives through to adulthood and we are very happy about this.

However, 2020 is a long way off and the government will fail to keep its promise of ending child poverty if it does not commit £3bn in tax credits and benefits in the next Budget.
