Opinion: Tories attempt to change their colours

David Cameron does combine a strange blend of traditional Tory values with some innovative and creative thinking, and it may prove to be a heady mix. He does, of course, bang on about family values, the importance of marriage and the case for personal responsibility; he is, after all, a Conservative. But he also recognises - concedes? - that not all the problems both caused and experienced by many of our most marginalised young people can be laid firmly and unequivocally at their door - and that of their families. Their roots are more complex. They have social causes and, if they are not addressed through societal strategies, they will have serious social consequences.
