Charlotte Rusher is 18 and has Down's syndrome. Her mother, Wendy, said she had been "absolutely horrified" after being told by a member of staff at Barclays in Ipswich that Charlotte was disqualified from opening a joint account because she was "mentally incompetent".
A spokesman for Barclays said: "When our staff were dealing with this application they misinterpreted disability guidelines." You bet.
Wendy told The Daily Telegraph that while Charlotte needs guidance, she has a right to have her own bank account and to spend her money as she wishes: "I was shocked that the bank could try to judge someone's competence or otherwise from just looking at them."
