The Sun set out the bare bones of the case: "A row erupted last night after a terrorised teacher was convicted of firing a pellet gun in a row with suspected yobs." As The Daily Telegraph described it, she pointed a Walther CP88 gas-powered pistol towards the pavement and fired up to six shots. "At the time she was standing 'nose to nose' with Robert McKiernan, 18, the convicted burglar she claimed was her chief protagonist."

Some local residents said Walker deserved a medal rather than a possible prison sentence. Could this become a cause celebre for vigilantes, like the Tony Martin case?
