So this year, Knowsley Borough Council has thoughtfully organised a trip to Alton Towers for some of the young people. And timed it for Halloween. "Taking them out for the day and bringing them back exhausted after a positive experience will make a difference to people on that night," says Tony Harvey, head of the council's social exclusion unit.

Good thinking. But is Mr Fisher pleased? He is not. He gives his views in a charmless piece of ignorance and prejudice masquerading as a news story in The Daily Telegraph. Under the headline "Louts get day trip to keep them out of trouble", the paper quotes Fisher ranting: "The last thing these thugs deserve is a free handout. They cause total carnage every year, forcing hundreds of residents to go into hiding for the day. The council should be paying for the victims of crime to be taken on a trip."
