Social policy trends in the United States are frequently mirrored here in the UK. We therefore ignore American research at our peril.

Which is why The Future of Children makes such interesting reading. It is a journal that sets out the latest data on children living in the US and evaluates policy and practice. The joint venture between Princeton University and the Brookings Institution, a well-respected think tank, is a highly regarded and regular commentary on the lives of US children.

The latest edition considers the wellbeing of children of immigrant families. On most measures, immigrant children fare badly. They are more likely to be living in poverty and do less well in their development. And despite facing more problems, they are less likely than other children to receive the help they need.
