Opinion: Soapbox - Parenting must come first for children in care

1 min read
According to Sonia Jackson and Peter McParlin in the February issue of The Psychologist, the "care system" is to blame for the continued failure to improve the educational outcomes of looked-after children.

This is like saying that fracture clinics are responsible forinjuries.

There may be a correlation between being looked after and poor lifeoutcomes, but correlations are not causes. The fact is that neglect andabuse account for the majority of children being admitted to care.

As professionals, we fail when we underestimate the impact of neglect, abuse and rejection. As a result, troubled and difficult children endureplacement breakdowns with foster parents who are ill equipped to dealwith their disturbance.

When children feel good about themselves, have a sense of belonging, canplay, and find joy in life, then their natural curiosity will stimulatetheir desire to learn, allowing them to engage with education.Frightened and rejected children will inevitably be more concerned aboutsurvival and protective skills than their studies.
