The poster claims that 50 per cent of parents with learning disabilitieshave their children taken into care but that, with support, many ofthese families could stay together. In fact, many vulnerable childrenare only able to stay with their families because of the crucial careand support of social workers. Every day, they work incredibly hard toenable children in need to be brought up by their parents without stateinterference.
It is a sad reality that even with intensive support, some parents aresimply not able to provide the care and attention necessary to keeptheir children safe and to meet their developmental needs.
While we appreciate the commission's aim to raise awareness about theneeds of people with learning disabilities, it is the child - not theparents - who must come first in decisions about their future.
