Opinion: Soapbox - Government must talk about communication

1 min read
Two weeks ago these pages expressed the hope of Ed Miliband, now secretary to the Cabinet Office and chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, that the new Government would "hear the voice of young people better than it has done in the past 10 years".

The prognosis is good. We have a Prime Minister whose "passion" iseducation. The creation of the Department for Children, Schools andFamilies (DCSF) signals that children's issues are firmly on thepolitical agenda and aligns the machinery of central governmentdepartments with the Every Child Matters agenda. Better still, Ed Balls, who has been such an effective champion of disabled children, has takenup the portfolio as children's secretary.

This follows a growing focus on the importance of communication. TheTreasury report Aiming High for Disabled Children: Better Support forFamilies identifies speech, language and communication as beingfundamental to children's learning and progression. Gordon Brown himselfrecognises that the ability to communicate has an impact on educationalsuccess and employability.
