In October 2006 I Can, the children's communication charity, launchedthe Make Chatter Matter campaign. I Can and a coalition of more than 39supporting organisations are highlighting the importance ofcommunication development for children from birth to five.
The campaign was launched on the back of a report, entitled The Cost tothe Nation of Children's Poor Communication, which revealed that, incertain parts of the UK, upwards of 50 per cent of children are reachingprimary school without the communication skills needed to learn, beconfident and make friends.
This is serious as the children concerned cannot followinstructions.
Some have problems producing speech sounds, while others have difficultyusing the right words and putting sentences together. Without earlyintervention and support at home they will be left out and leftbehind.
