Opinion: Soapbox - Disabled children need ringfenced funding

1 min read
The Chancellor's decision to review services and support to disabled children and their families in the run up to the Comprehensive Spending Review is great news.

We have been lobbying for the past two years to get disabled children onto the Government's agenda, and last month, MP Ed Balls presented a10-minute rule Bill to promote the rights of disabled children.

The Government has finally acknowledged our concerns that, through thefocus on universal children's services, disabled children and theirfamilies are missing out. There are now 770,000 disabled children in theUK. They can wait months for an assessment and as long again before theyreceive any equipment, physiotherapy or speech and language support. They cost three times as much as other children to bring up, yet theirmothers are seven times less likely to be in work. Small wonder that 55per cent of these families live in poverty.
