Opinion: Soapbox - A code to allow all parents a choice of schools

1 min read
On 28 February, having lain in Parliament for the requisite 45 days, the School Admissions Code will gain formal Parliamentary approval and become law.

What this means is that, from September 2008, admissions arrangements toall maintained schools and academies will have to be made "in accordancewith" the code, which is much tougher that the one it replaces.

More important for parents is the assurance that all of their localschools (apart from independent and private schools) will have to setout their admissions policies absolutely clearly - and only offer placesin accordance with them.

One of the main elements of the code is a list of things schools mustnot do in allocating places. Interviews are no longer allowed, andschools cannot take account of the financial or marital status of thechild's parents. Also, the willingness (or ability) of parents tosupport the school financially can not be taken into account.
