Schools must consult parents on admissions

Schools will have a legal duty to consult parents and the community before setting admissions arrangements, under the admissions code presented to Parliament last week.

The new system will provide parents with improved information on the admissions process.

Local Admissions Forums will be made representative of parents and the local community, and there will be a national closing date for all school applications.

Schools will be banned from asking parents questions about their marital status or occupation, but will be allowed to advise applicants of the school "ethos", and demand that children respect that ethos.

Children's Secretary Ed Balls said that the new code would allow parents to help shape school policies and make schools more representative of the local communities they serve.

But Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), claimed the revised code focuses too much on parental preference.
