NO - John Dunford, general secretary, Association of School and College Leaders
Having said no, I think student councils are really important. But what's important is the quality of student councils, not whether you've got one or not. If you had legislation for it, it would tempt schools to set one up just so they can tick a box.
My feeling is that all schools should have school councils, but that they should not be made to do so, because I'm against the Government laying down requirements for everything under the sun. What's important to me is that schools have a high degree of consultation with young people and that they listen to the student voice.
