Opinion: Hot issue - Is there a place for evangelism in youth work?

1 min read

YES - PAUL BAYES, national mission and evangelical adviser, Church of England: There is room in youth work for a certain type of evangelism but no place for the manipulation of young people. There should always be a space in youth work for young people to share what's important to them with others and people are free to change their minds. The full aims and criteria for the Youth Evangelism Fund state that sharing faith needs to be done in a transparent and open way.

NO - KEITH PORTEOUS WOOD, executive director, National Secular Society: I would be concerned if it was public money, but if the Church wants to do this with its own funds then it is up to it. However, I do worry about other aspects of church teachings such as abstinence, and attitudes towards homosexuality. Young people should learn to think for themselves and I worry about where this fund could push them.
