Opinion: Hot Issue - Has the YHA lost sight of its originalcountryside mission?

3 mins read

YES - STEVE LENARTOWICZ, chair, Institute for Outdoor Learning.

I understand that any organisation has to deal with financial realities.

But if the YHA is proposing to close hostels in the countryside then I would say it has lost its countryside mission. There are areas in the countryside where the YHA is the only provider and it would be a shame if this was lost. It is very difficult to judge a situation from the outside, but maybe marketing the hostels more would help.

If many of the hostels that close are in green-belt areas, young people who live in the nearby cities will lose out. Green-belt hostels are great for young people who are perhaps not ready for a completely rural experience.
