OPINION: Hot Issue - Do detached youth workers get the credit theydeserve?

How can detached youth workers get the credit they deserve when the youth service gets such scant recognition at a national and local level? Detached youth work is, or should be, an integral part of local youth service plans and operational delivery, but this is not always the case. Is it any wonder, therefore, that the work has a low profile and is left out of social policy documents and, critically, the recent green paper?

Recognition begins at home. Detached youth work projects could be much more active in promoting their methods and achievements. More informative publicity may be required and imaginative ways for young people to contribute could be sought.
