London has shown that by investing heavily in road safety, young people's lives can be saved. The mayor has rightly set even tougher targets to bring down further the number of children and young people killed or seriously injured, because 355 children killed or seriously injured is 355 too many.
Children and young people need to play outdoors for a minimum of 60 minutes a day, and many play in the streets in the neighbourhoods where they live.
This is why London Play, with funding from the Association of London Government, is piloting Home Zones for London in five boroughs. Home Zones works in partnership with communities and planners to make local streets more people- and play-friendly.
