Opinion: Feedback

I'd like to commend Young People Now for its inclusivity. By consistently raising the issues facing minority young people, you are helping to raise awareness of their needs within the mainstream sector. I was particularly interested to read, "Sector's struggle to reach outside the mainstream" (YPN, 9-15 May, p9).

I believe we do need targeted provision alongside mainstream services, to ensure the needs of minority young people are met, as various government policies suggest, including Youth Matters and the Joint planning and commissioning framework for children, young people and maternity services.

But we need to ensure that all non-mainstream groups of young people are included, otherwise the youth sector will simply perpetuate a "hierarchy of oppression" and set minority groups up against each other.
