Opinion: Fathers' contribution must be recognised

After months of fathers dressed as superheroes aloft famous landmarks, fatherhood has finally started to enjoy a better press.

First there was news that Fathers 4 Justice had expelled its militant members and declared a truce with the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service, which advises courts in child custody cases.

Then research published by the Equal Opportunities Commission provided clear evidence of a shift in fathers' attitudes towards looking after young children. Eight in 10 of working fathers interviewed said they would be happy to stay at home and look after the baby.

I spent Father's Day reading about some of the latest research on fatherhood, which shows that British fathers are not alone in increasing their share of childcare. The same trend is being reported in countries all around the world.
