Government tells services to engage with fathers

The government is working with a fatherhood thinktank to get councils, PCTs and children's services to raise their game when it comes to including fathers.

Research commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families shows that managers and practitioners lack training in the needs of fathers, while fathers feel children's services are "not for them".

The DCSF will work with thinktank the Fatherhood Institute on the Think Fathers campaign. The institute will publish a guide to help children's services improve the way they work with dads, hold a summit to encourage services to look specifically at fathers rather than parents, and create a website to publish the views of parents and children on fatherhood.

The Fatherhood Institute has emailed more than 6,000 decision-makers in councils, children's services and PCTs, outlining five key approaches to making services more inclusive.
