OPINION: Editorial - Boxing clever can only be a good thing

I remember my own first encounter with boxing very well. As a 12-year-old I entered my local club with some trepidation. In our town, like many others, I suspect, there was one kid who everyone else was frightened of. In my area his name was Lee. And who should be standing opposite me when I'd laced up my gloves for my first sparring session? You guessed it... Lee.

I didn't have too much time to be frightened. Before I knew it, we were off and sparring. I took a few shots and so did Lee, but the trainer was quick to make sure neither of us hurt each other too much and we concentrated on the basic principles of boxing: a good jab and keeping your gloves up for defensive purposes.
