Opinion: Debate - Should young people be forced to stay at schoolup to 18?

1 min read
A Government green paper suggests young people should stay in education or training until they turn 18 and even considers the possibility of fining young people who snub school, effectively criminalising children for non-attendance.

YES - Paul Brown, 18, a pupil at The Weald School in Billingshurst, WestSussex

I think it's a good idea to stay in school until you are 18 but only ifthere are more courses available for people who don't want to dostrictly academic subjects. Courses in carpentry, for example, orplumbing could give people practical skills, which are just as importantas academic skills. I think it would be better to raise the schoolleaving age so there are fewer people out on the streets - and why notfine them if they don't turn up? It's much better for them to be inschool.

NO - Kathy Evans, policy director, The Children's Society
