I read with interest the white paper proposals for pupil referral units(CYP Now, 21-27 May). ContinYou supports the move to improve educationfor excluded pupils. Our system often fails those in pupil referralunits, so we must reconsider how we facilitate learning.
Young people have a range of abilities and learning styles and learningoutside the classroom may be a better environment for some. ContinYoubelieves personalised learning is the key to success for students with avariety of needs and an individualised programme taught within a safecommunity is often the best way to meet them.
Private companies and voluntary organisations could have a major role toplay in offering a broader curriculum to young people in pupil referralunits, but this must be as part of an integrated approach to children'sservices as a whole.
