I'd like to ask readers to join us in registering our serious concerns about the continued assault on young people through consistently depicting them as problems.

The New Place Survey contains a question that typifies the negative stereotyping of young people: "How much of a problem are teenagers hanging round the street? Very big problem. Fairly big problem. Not a big problem." A subsequent question replaces teenagers with "abandoned or burnt-out cars". The presumption that hanging around is in itself antisocial is appalling.
