On the ground: Me & my youth worker - 'Jan helped me accept I wasbisexual'

1 min read
James, 19, a young transsexual and Jan Bridget, manager, Gay and Lesbian Youth in Calderdale (GALYIC).

- When did you first come into contact with each other?

James: "When I was about 15 I was bullied quite badly at school. I'd tell teachers but they told me to just make friends with them, and accuse me of being oversensitive. I'd been threatened with a knife and one kid tried to blowtorch my head with an aerosol can and a lighter. One day I took a friend down to the information shop because she needed housing advice and I saw a GALYIC leaflet, which I picked up and hid in my bag."

Jan: "I kept getting lots of silent phone calls to the helpline number. It's nothing unusual as many young people who are questioning their sexuality find it really difficult to talk. With a lot of coaxing, I eventually managed to get James - who was living as a girl at the time - to come along to GALYIC. "
