Ofsted guidance poses threat to adventurous play, London Play warns

1 min read Early Years
Ofsted guidance is out of step with government efforts to curb the health and safety culture that discourages risky play, London Play warned this week.

The children's services watchdog issued guidance for services that sign up to the childcare register, which includes some play services, at the end of August.

But Alan Sutton, policy and development officer at charity London Play, said this week the guidance posed serious threats to the work of play professionals.

In particular, the guidance says registered settings "must ensure all necessary measures are taken to minimise any identified risks" - a requirement Sutton warned could push services to avoid adventurous play activities.

"This is seriously out of step with the risk-benefit analysis now advocated and used in play settings with the support of the Play Safely Council and with the spirit of the government's Fair Play proposals," he said.
