Ofsted could look at commissioning

Local authorities could be inspected on how well they commission children's services as part of the Comprehensive Areas Assessment (CAA), due to launch in April 2009.

Speaking at last week's National Children's Commissioning andContracting Training Conference, Ofsted inspector Karen Dolton said CAAinspections could prompt in-depth appraisals of commissioningpractice.

Dolton also said Ofsted plans to ask children and young people incommissioned care placements for their views.

She added that Ofsted needs to link information about how localauthorities and independent service providers work together.
