Obituary: Children's commissioner - An influential advocate forchildren

The late Peter Clarke became the first children's commissioner for Wales in 2001, but his passion for the job had an effect far beyond the principality's borders. Shafik Meghji speaks to those who knew him to pay tribute to his courage and commitment.

Peter Clarke, the children's commissioner for Wales, who has died aftera long battle with lung cancer aged 58, was a pioneer.

He became commissioner in 2001 - on St David's Day, appropriately - thefirst person in the UK to hold such a role. His appointment was in parta response to the Waterhouse Inquiry, which looked at abuse inchildren's homes in north Wales.

Clarke soon earned a reputation as a committed and passionate advocatefor children and young people, both in Wales and further afield. Hespoke out on a wide range of issues during his time in office includingsexual abuse, looked-after children and bullying.

"Peter was very much a pioneer," says Wales's First Minister RhodriMorgan.
