The bank will provide staff cover free of charge to nurseries that want to send their own employees on training courses funded by the local authority. Nurseries struggling with staff cover, for example because of sickness, will also be able to pay a fee to use the staff bank in emergencies.
The idea for the staff bank, set up by the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) and Peterborough City Council, came about after childcare providers said a lack of staff cover meant nursery workers could not attend training.
The local authority has funded a business sustainability officer, Katie Woolnough, to support the bank.
