NURSERY CARE: Call for wider use of overseas staff

Staff should be brought in from abroad to stem the recruitment crisis in the childcare sector, according to the director of a childcare staffing agency.

Ben Black, director of Tinies Childcare, told the Annual Children's Nursery Conference that recruitment from overseas was the "obvious route" to counter employee shortages.

He called on employers to look to Europe, Australia and New Zealand for staff but warned time and money would need to be committed for the process to be successful.

"The biggest issue is checking childcare qualifications and then convincing people to come over (to the UK)," he said.

But the National Day Nurseries Association dismissed his comments. Liz Richardson, manager of the group's accreditation scheme, said: "The only way to solve the crisis is for more money to come into the sector to support decent wages."
