OPINION: Debate - Should British nurseries recruit staff from overseas?

The shortage of nursery workers could derail the Government's plan to expand childcare provision, so hiring from countries such as Sweden and New Zealand has been touted as a way to deal with the problem in the short term.

We would support the view that overseas workers - providing they are properly qualified - are fine. We would temper that, though, by saying that clearly someone with a UK qualification will have a greater knowledge of UK training and procedures. They will have knowledge of the foundation stage, for example, and a greater awareness of UK legislation. However, in the right circumstances, overseas workers have a considerable amount to offer.

On the surface we wouldn't have a problem if an overseas candidate is suitable, and you can't militate against who nurseries hire. But we are worried about how checks can be made on overseas workers - not just on their suitability and criminal record but their qualifications. If you're hiring from abroad it is not because of a shortage of workers here. Are proprietors trying to cut their salary bills? We would urge employers to look at the home market.
