Nurseries: Childcare grant for small businesses

Small and medium-sized businesses will be given 16.8m to provide childcare for their employees, children's minister Beverley Hughes has announced.

The workplace nurseries capital scheme will be delivered by regionaldevelopment agencies, led by the London Development Agency, inpartnership with local authorities. They will identify where thenurseries will be set up.

Hughes said: "Most good employers want to help families balance work andfamily life. Some are already providing childcare - we want to take thisfurther."

Kate Goddard, policy and research officer at childcare charity DaycareTrust, said the scheme would help embed the national childcarestrategy.

She said: "SMEs (small and medium- sized enterprises) will find itharder than public sector or large employers to provide childcare, sowill need support to make that a reality for their employees."
