Twelve per cent of articles about young people in national and local papers covered accidents, the majority of which cast the young person as a victim.

Stories about child abuse and neglect also made up 12 per cent of the stories about young people.

Young women were more likely to be portrayed as victims of violence than young men and in articles about violence where gender was stated, young women were cast as victims in nine out of 10 cases. In contrast, young men were described as victims in 32 per cent of stories about violence, and offenders in 68 per cent of reports.
