Volunteers surveyed almost 100 under-26s in gay venues across the city and found that 27 per cent of the respondents had tried to end their life at least once, making them nearly seven times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population.
Many respondents reported feelings of depression and the authors criticised the tendency to pathologise sexuality as a cause of depression. "Being gay is not the problem," said Sam Porter, outreach worker and co-author of the report. "There are issues around employment, status, masculinity, and how society portrays same-sex love. They feel 'different' in a world that values sameness."
