The Generation Enterprise report, published last week, identifies a generation of young people "with drive and ambition, who want it all". It found 49 per cent of young people wanted to set up their own business. But this applied to 63 per cent of young men and just 44 per cent of young women.
The Prince's Trust confirmed that applications for its business start-up loans followed a similar 60-40 spilt. The trust recently launched its Women Working campaign, which aims to raise 2m to support disadvantaged young women to start enterprises or get into education or employment.
The Equal Opportunities Commission said the figures reinforced findings from its recent study Free to Choose. This found that young people, and especially girls from disadvantaged groups, are still being channelled into traditional jobs. The commission called for all young people to get careers advice that gave them maximum choice. More role models of successful women entrepreneurs are also needed.
