The allowances are given to 17- and 18-year-olds who stay in education, and range from 10 to 30 a week. The benefit is available to young people from families with a household income of less than 30,000 and there are wide variations in regional take-up. In the Northwest, 50,427 young people received grants and in London 49,426 signed up. At the other end of the scale, only 19,184 young people in the Northeast were given allowances.
Steve Stewart, a trustee of education charity ContinYou, said: "It is a thumbs-up for a great start to education maintenance allowances. They've obviously helped young people who want to stay in learning."
