Numbers game Asylum seekers

According to a Home Office study released last week, 725 young people applied to stay in the UK during the period, an increase of 90 on the previous quarter. The most applications came from Somalia, with 90, followed by Afghanistan, with 60, and Vietnam and Eritrea, both with 40.

Overall applications, including dependants such as children and spouses, were down to 10,585 from 13,150 in October to December 2003. The number of failed applications for asylum in the quarter rose one per cent to 3,320, a 27 per cent increase on the same period last year. Including dependants, this amounts to 4,085.
