NUMBERS GAME: Asthma

Almost a third of 13- to 14-year-olds have experienced symptoms of the condition, according to the report, The Global Burden of Asthma. This makes them almost three times more likely to suffer than young people in France and Germany.

Scotland has the highest percentage of teenagers with asthma, with 37 per cent reporting symptoms, followed by Jersey (36 per cent) and Guernsey (35 per cent).

Professor Andrew Greening, professor of pulmonary diseases and consultant physician at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, said: "This is unacceptable because there is so much we could do to prevent asthma. Patients often put up with their symptoms."
