BRIEFING: Research Report - Childhood asthma

1 min read
The UK has the highest incidence of asthma in Europe and rates are rising every year but the exact causes of the condition are still unknown.

More than a third of Scottish and Welsh 13- and 14-year-olds have shown symptoms of asthma in the past year, as have three in 10 English children, according to a new report.

In contrast, the rate is just 12 per cent among German and French children.

More than 10 million Britons are clinically asthmatic and this figure is rising by a million a year on average. These shocking figures have been released by the Global Initiative for Asthma (Gina), which aims to increase awareness of, and disseminate information about, the condition.

Other organisations report different statistics, however. The National Asthma Campaign and the European Commission put the number of diagnosed UK sufferers at eight million and say five million are undergoing treatment.
