Northern Ireland: Province to appoint children's minister

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain outlined the plan for a minister for under-18s in his response to a report on the vetting of people who work with young people by Nigel Williams, the province's children and young people's commissioner. No time scale has yet been announced.

A spokeswoman for Barnardo's Northern Ireland said: "The job is likely to be given to a junior minister or placed in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister." The report on vetting made 36 recommendations. Hain said 80 per cent of the concerns raised have already been addressed.
