Rosie Burrows, development manager at the young people's charity and the researcher behind the We'll never be the same report, said that more than a third of young people in Northern Ireland had experienced some form of violence because of sectarianism.
"We've seen young people's response to trauma manifested through risk-taking behaviour, including binge drinking that gets misdiagnosed as attention-seeking," she added.
"But statutory youth services are not aware of the impact of trauma and many parents can't give support as they are suffering themselves, and their trauma gets passed on to their children."
The report highlighted the need for more youth professionals to be trained to support people living in conflict areas.
