Northern Ireland: Higher pay scale for youth workers

The deal affects 150 youth workers, who are owed about 1m in back pay. This will be allocated once the job descriptions are agreed.

Union officials met representatives of the Education and Library Boards - which run youth services in the country - last week to resolve the dispute (YPN, 30 May-5 June, p2). This began when new pay scales were brought in three years ago. The final deadline for their implementation is September.

Francis Loughlin, Northern Ireland convener for the community and youth workers' section of Unite, said: "The meeting was very positive. The Education and Library Boards have been putting aside money for the back pay and have it ready.
