Youth worker pay and conditions

1 min read Youth Work
The latest pay agreements for local authority youth workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland were due to come into effect this week. Simon Vevers examines how youth worker pay is decided across the UK.

ENGLAND

The pay and conditions of youth workers are agreed through a national joint negotiating committee (JNC) made up of local authority leaders and four unions: the Community and Youth Workers Union (a section of Unite); Unison; the National Union of Teachers; and the University and College Union. The JNC for youth workers, set up in 1961, includes voluntary sector employers and, according to the terms of the negotiating committee, staff paid either by the local authority or by government grant.

The annual pay agreement becomes effective from 1 September each year. This year the unions have lodged a claim for a "substantial rise" and negotiations are ongoing.
