Northern Ireland: Cross-border plan to boost childcare

The Northern Ireland Childminding Association is to launch a project to give childcare training to women living on both sides of the Irish border.

The two-year scheme is set to target six areas on both sides of the border - three in the north and three in the south - offering women basic and foundation training in childcare and the chance to work towards an NVQ.

The Association's director Bridget Nodder said around 500 women were expected to benefit from the programme, funded by 444,000 from the European Social Fund's peace and reconciliation programme.

"This is about upskilling local women who have been unemployed and suffered economic deprivation," she said.

Interviews for a project manager and three training and development workers will be held later this month, and Nodder said the scheme should be up and running by the end of May.
