Northern Ireland: Commissioner post goes to politician

A leading politician has been appointed as the new commissioner for children and young people in Northern Ireland.

Patricia Lewsley has stepped down as equality spokesperson for the SDLPand chair of the All-Party Assembly Group on Children and YoungPeople.

She will start the job later this month. She replaces Nigel Williams whodied in March 2006.

Lewsley said: "This is about doing what I do currently in a differentway. As commissioner I will be able to focus all of my energies on thatwork."

The Democratic Unionist Party gave Lewsley a cautious welcome.Children's spokesperson Arlene Foster said: "The DUP has no fundamentalproblem with former politicians holding any post so long as they are thebest candidate for the job."
