A unit to advise health workers on how to deliver cost-effective child and maternal health services has been launched.

The Child and Maternal Health Intelligence Unit (ChiMat), based at the Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Observatory, will provide evidence for commissioners and providers on how to deliver cost-effective services.

Jake Abbas, deputy director at the Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Observatory, said: "The aim of the unit is to improve access to information and to support practitioners working in commissioning roles."

A website set up by the unit will provide information on child health research, details of performance indicators and a data directory that links organisations providing healthcare information. The ChiMat Knowledge and Information Hub website will also contain tools to help commissioners carry out local health needs assessments.
