The Baby P case sent shockwaves through the children's sector, but what impact will it have on practice? Joe Lepper reports.

"This case has put child protection firmly at the forefront of our minds. It has hammered home the need to be vigilant and act on those niggling feelings we may have had. We have made all our staff aware it is far better to be cautious and act rather than do nothing. Since the Baby P case we have looked again at our child protection procedures to redouble our efforts. These procedures are already part of the induction process for teachers but we have extended them to all casual staff, such as play workers. It is important all staff know what to do if they suspect a problem and who to contact."
